Agencies take steps to protect Boundary Waters Wilderness

The U.S. Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture today announced important steps to protect the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), which is home to Minnesota’s native inland lake trout stocks.

The agencies denied Twin Metals’ application for renewal of two hard rock mineral leases in the area and began the process of withdrawing key portions of the watershed from new federal mineral permits and leases.

The Department of Agriculture announcement on the decision includes additional links to decision documents and maps.

Congress set aside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness more than 50 years ago. The area draws 150,000 visitors annually and is a crucial element of the region's economy.
