The trout and Mountain Whitefish eagerly await our Annual Meeting Fishing Day TU Anglers! We've been getting some good, old-fashioned Montana fall weather with much cooler temperatures, below freezing in the mountains and in the upper 30's in the valleys, some rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains. Perfect weather for great fall fly fishing in Montana! Yestreday, I had the opportunity to guide some disabled veterans from the Bozeman based Warriors and Quiet Waters program on a small stream tributary of the Missouri River, and the brown trout were just crushing streamers! The browns have on their bright and beautiful colors spawning colors and are feeding hard. There's nothing quite like the "full body brown trout strike" when they hit so hard they carry their full body length out of the water. Good stuff! I am getting a lot of questions about flies. As I mentioned, streamer patterns are great in the fall. I like the cone and beadhead buggers in brown, black, and olive. I also fish a lot of conehead JJ's streamers and still fish some of the old school stuff like the light Spruce and the Platte River Specials. You can fish some larger streamers in sizes 2 and 4 and if you like, some of the big articulated streamers, too. If you have questions about flies, I would suggest contacting one of our Bozeman area TU B's for advice and specific fly suggestions. When you are in Montana, please support our TU B members! http://www.tu.org/tu-business/MT See you at the Element Hotel at 7:30AM on Wednesday, September 28th!
