This will be an exciting afternoon of fun and an opportunity to learn fly fishing basics -- learning the ABC's of what fly fishing is all about and to determine if the sport is something you'd like to pursue. The Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited and our sponsor Alpharetta Outfitters will be setting up several learning stations at the Chattahoochee Nature Center's lakeside pavilion and all participants will circulate to each of the stations during the afternoon.

This is the second year for this sold-out event! Here's what you'll be experiencing:

River Conservation and Entomology

The history of the Chattahoochee and why the river needs to be protected and preserved. Receive a short course on the river's 'bugs' that are imitated as 'flies' -- used to catch trout and other aquatic species. You'll also hear about and view a stream display model designed to show both a healthy river and one that's very polluted.

Knot Tying

Before you begin your fly fishing adventure you'll need to know the basic knots used to secure your fly to the tippet and tippet to the line and line to the backing. Sounds complicated? It really isn't. Come and learn the basic knots to get started fishing.

Fly Tying

Once you've mastered the fine art of fly fishing, you'll want to start tying your own flies. There's thousands of different fly patterns out there, but you really only need to know 10 or so to get out on the river and fish. It's a great hobby and a lot of fun.

Fly Casting

Work with certified instructors and fly fishing guides to learn the gentle art of fly casting.

Gear Selection

Our sponsor, Alpharetta Outfitters, will have a tent set up and experts on hand to guide you in what gear you'll need to get out on the river. From waders to boots to vest and nippers the experts at AO will help you put together a great shopping list. Ask questions and learn from the pros.

We're also planning to have snacks and drinks on hand. Come out and enjoy a great afternoon.
