Latest on the Snake River - from the locals

Nope!  With the highs returning to the upper 60′s and mid-70′s this week, expect the Snake to have a very brown tint by the weekend.  If the Snake River is your only option for fishing in the near future, the best place to find clean water to fish will be from the Jackson Lake Dam downstream to Pacific Creek.  This is a short section, however, and the water will remain low, very cold, but clear for the next couple of weeks.  Midges and Blue Wing Olives have been hatching providing some dry fly opportunities in the afternoon.  Nymphing in the foam lines of the recirculating eddies will produce a few fish, too!  Its always worth while to cast some sparse but heavy streamers, especially after the Ox Box.  There are a lot of brown trout and lake trout on this section and they will act aggressively toward a slowly stripped or swung streamer.

Don’t expect to see or catch a lot of nice size cutties as they seem to making their way up into the tributaries and springs to spawn.  Focusing your efforts on the seams where these two currents are mixing, though, is a good idea.    Especially focus on the areas where the cleaner water of a spring creek or tributary is mixing with the main current of the Snake.  With the cutties staging for their spawn at the mouths of the tribs and springs, you can pick up some nice trout fishing the areas where these currents are mixing.  Also, be aware that many of these springs are closed until August 1st to protect the spawning cutthroat trout.  Make sure that you’re not wandering up into a closed area.  Check the Wyoming Fishing  Regulations or stop by our shop to find out what tributaries are open to fish and which ones are closed until August 1st.
