Fear not, if you are new to our region, East Tennessee has been known for some years to have 5 winters. Here they are for the uninitiated, Redbud Winter: early April, Dogwood Winter: late April, Locust Winter: early May, Blackberry Winter: mid-May, Britches Winter: late May. Add in many warm weather days and this is what makes up the beauty of our area. Spring fishing thrives in these conditions of warm days, cool water temps and even allows the angler a chance at an extra cup of coffee while the morning water temps rise. Everywhere I go the talk, whether in person or on the internet is about the coming cicada hatch. Anglers of every description from fly fishers to spinning rod enthusiasts are anticipating fish hammering them. The topic by all either chasing smallies or trout right now is about the bounty of bugs and fish on the horizon. That said, the next chapter meeting on Thursday, April 25th will center on “Cicada-Geddon”. That night at Dead End BBQ we are going to tie the cicada fly so everyone will be ready for the hatch. We will be providing all the material and hooks needed to tie your own with instructions by experienced tiers. Even if you have no vise or tools, we will have some on hand so you can take part. Never tied before… this is a great way to try it in a judgement free zone. If you have your own vise and tools, please bring them and any extras for others to share. Throw in some top shelf BBQ and brews from Dead End BBQ and it all makes for a great evening. Our last tie-in during December was a lot of fun and for many there it was a first-time tying experience. No matter your skill level, come on out, no reservation required, join us for an evening of good food and company! Remember to follow us on the GSM TU Facebook page and the chapter website. Our Facebook page is the best way to see the latest chapter and updates. As always, we remind you that a Trout Unlimited membership is never required to a GSM TU event or meetings. All are welcome!
