We will assess habitat along a 1 to 2 mile section of Bee Tree Run, which is known to hold a healthy wild trout population. This section of the stream is located immediately adjacent to the North Central Rail Trail which will provide easy access. This monitoring event is a great educational opportunity for those interested in trout habitat, freshwater ecology, and stream conservation. Teams will be assigned a stream reach to assess the presence of trout and trout habitat, potential stream stressors, and the overall health of a trout stream like Bee Tree Run. This will involve wading the stream, mapping in-stream habitat structures and stream substrate type, general macro-invertebrates (aquatic insects) survey and identification, and recording water temperature. In addition, each team will utilize a GPS unit and camera to document features along each stream section. Experienced MDTU Team Leaders will provide instruction and demonstrate necessary skills so that volunteers may apply these techniques on their own favorite trout stream. Plan to meet at the Kittle Pavilion by 9 am. Stream assessments will be complete by 12 noon followed immediately by a cookout with lively discussion! Also, during the cookout, join MDTU members for informal fly casting instruction and practice. MDTU leaders will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have. The fly casting event will be held in the open field next to pavilion. Please click on the link below to RSVP, and forward the invitation to a friend! Register Now!
