September 2018 Meeting

Our 2018/2019 meeting season opens up with what sounds like a great presentation by Don Dean. We have a great group of speakers and activities planned for this year. Stay tuned to our web site and Facebook page for updates as we roll out the schedule for the season!

Aquatic Insects of Ohio; Monitoring for Water Quality and Matching the Hatch"
Aquatic insects are trout food. Therefore it behooves the ardent angler to know his bugs and to be able to "match the hatch" or more specifically match the nymphs. In addition, identifying aquatic insects is a great hobby and is a true indication of the quality of the water.  The presentation will cover the major groups of aquatic insects found in Ohio streams and flies to match.

Don Dean retired in 2012 from the Ohio State University , where he worked on Protein Engineering of insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis.  He is currently Professor Emeritus in Biochemistry and Entomology.   He is an avid fly fisherman.  His home waters are the Mad River and the Clear Fork of the Mohican.  Since retirement, he splits his efforts on his long time interests of aquatic macroinvertebrates and work for Trout Unlimited.  He spends several days a week identifying insects to genus and species.  He has developed a webpage for Stoneflies of Ohio.  He is a member of the Madmen Chapter Board of Directors and is the Trout Unlimited’s Ohio State Council Chair and Coordinator for Trout in the Classroom and Youth Education.

The meeting will be at Charlie's Taverna in Maumee.  The address is 1631 Toll Gate Dr, Maumee, OH 43537. Dinner will be at 6:00 PM and the presentation will begin at 7:00. Please be there in time to place your dinner order by 6:15 if you plan on having dinner.
