Spring pause

The morning light in the window is soft and bright. The old Labrador takes her time getting up out of bed. It’s cold in the room and I’m lamenting the fact that I didn’t turn the heat on last night.

These are signs of a spring in the Rockies. No need to check the forecast. No need to check the fishing reports. The river is blown out.

Spring snow is a hard element to welcome anyone to the water.

I keep telling myself that in winter this would be exciting. The water would be lower, clearer and full of more possibility.

I head out with the mindset of observing the river, the snow falling and runoff nearly in full swing. Much like watching the water for signs of fish I’m now watching the natural movements of swift water and still snow.

Summer will soon be here. In the meantime I’ll enjoy the pause on spring.
