We will assess habitat along a 1 to 2 mile section up and downstream of Masemore Road, known to hold a healthy wild brown trout population. This event is a great educational opportunity for anyone interested in trout habitat, freshwater ecology, and stream conservation. (No special expertise or skills required.) Last fall, MDTU volunteers assessed a section of Bee Tree Run. That event has helped to further define how such habitat assessment efforts can help Maryland's Department of Natural Resources and other conservation organizations like Trout Unlimited. Teams will be assigned a stream reach to assess the presence of trout and trout habitat, potential stream stressors, and the overall health of the stream. This will involve wading the stream, assessing in-stream habitat structures and stream substrate type, general macro-invertebrate (aquatic insect) survey and identification, and recording water temperature. In addition, each team will be encouraged to use a GPS unit and camera to document features along each stream section. Experienced MDTU Team Leaders will provide instruction and demonstrate necessary skills so that volunteers may apply these techniques on their own favorite trout stream. Plan to meet on May 2nd at the Masemore Road parking area by 9 am. (Directions below.) Stream assessments will be complete by 12 noon followed immediately by a cookout with lively discussion! MDTU leaders will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, May 2nd! Directions: From Baltimore beltway, (I-695) head north on I-83 for 12 miles to the Hereford exit. (Mt. Carmel Road) Turn left to head west on Mt. Carmel for one mile, then turn right onto Masemore Road. Continue for 2.4 miles on Masemore. The parking area is on the right side, just before the bridge over the Gunpowder. Additional parking is found along the road just past the bridge. Please click on the link below to RSVP, and forward the invitation to a friend! Register Now!
