Friday, October 28th, 2022 - 5:30pm to Friday, October 28th, 2022 - 6:30pm

Happy to announce a special fund raising event for our Chapter. We hope some of you can attend these events.

Artist and angler Nick Lamia will present “Tailwaters Project,” an exhibition of paintings and installation art at the AVA Gallery in Lebanon, NH from Oct 14 through Nov 12, 2022. The gallery is open Tues-Sat from 1pm-5pm.There will also be an artist’s talk, free to the public, on October 28 at 5:30pm. Both events are at the gallery in Lebanon.

Lamia studied environmental science and taught ecology before becoming an artist and his artwork is inspired by places where society and nature overlap. During the first year of Covid, Lamia often fished on the tailwaters below reservoirs that supply drinking water to his home base of New York City. He realized the tailwaters and their respective dams are perfect examples of the intertwining of society with nature. He began visiting tailwaters throughout New York and New England, seeking not only trout, but also inspiring locations to photograph. The photos he uses as references for abstract artworks.

“Few people would guess these paintings come from looking at real life because it’s not at all obvious,” Lamia says. But that’s by design, he explains, “My goal is to create images that evoke, rather than illustrate my observations of the intertwining of society and nature.” He adds also that “if one looks at the paintings together with the photographic references, the connections are unmistakable.”

One of the biggest challenges in my career has been to find ways to use my artwork to do good. I’ve always aimed for it to provoke conversations about climate change and ecological responsibility, which remains true, but I’ve been searching for a way to make a more concrete difference. Since the “Tailwaters” works were inspired by my experiences fishing, when the opportunity to exhibit them came about, it seemed natural to contact Trout Unlimited about a collaboration. I’m thrilled there was interest and excited to donate half of my portion of any sales to the Greater Upper Valley Trout Unlimited so that those funds can be put to good use.
