Tiadaghton Chapter Holiday Dinner and Didymo Presentation

Holiday dinner and December meeting, Monday 12/8, Lambs Creek Food and Spirits, Mansfield, 5:30p.

We'll be gathering for a tasty meal on your own, after which Matt Shank from the Susquehanna River Basin Commission will be sharing a presentation on his research on the invasive diatom called didymo, which many of you know has made an appearance in Pine Creek (read more http://www.pinecreekwatershedrcp.org/proj-didymo.htm). The title of Matt's talk is: Didymo in Pine Creek: distribution, abundance, and implications Brief description: Didymosphenia geminata (didymo), a species of algae capable of forming nuisance mats that cover the stream bed, was first detected in Pine Creek in 2013. Scientists from the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) collected data in 2014 to provide a basis for understanding the abundance and spatial distribution of this diatom throughout the Pine Creek watershed. The results of these activities and implications for fishermen and recreationists will be discussed, in addition to future research plans that will further our understanding of this issue.

Matt is an Aquatic Biologist with the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC). He has been with SRBC since 2008 and spent a lot of time investigating the effects of water withdrawals on fish and aquatic insects. He also has strong interests in invasive species and the relationship between landscape disturbance and stream ecology. The Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) is an interstate agency that manages water resources throughout the 27,510 square mile Susquehanna River watershed, which includes parts of Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland.
