TU welcomes new board members

Trout Unlimited recently welcomed five new board members at its annual meeting in Redding, CA. The new trustees demonstrate a strong mix of conservation expertise, advertising acumen, business management experience and a passion for Trout Unlimited’s mission of protecting and restoring North America’s trout and salmon and their watersheds.

 

“These individuals bring a tremendous amount of talent and knowledge to our organization. They join an esteemed group of leaders who guide the most effective coldwater conservation organization in the nation, and I am grateful for their willingness to serve Trout Unlimited,” said Chris Wood, Trout Unlimited’s president and CEO.

 

The new trustees are:

 

Scott Blackley, Leesburg, VA

Scott Blackley was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and spent his summers on the Upper Provo River fishing weighted nymph rigs for whitefish and trout. As a college student at the University of Utah, he was introduced to dry flies and developed a love for the Henry’s Fork and the greater Yellowstone area. He has been a member of Trout Unlimited for over a decade and is also a member of the Coldwater Conservation Fund.

 

Mr. Blackley is Chief Financial Officer for Capital One, a Fortune 100 company headquartered in McLean, Virginia. As Capital One’s CFO, Mr. Blackley serves on the company’s Executive Committee and reports to Capital One’s Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Richard D. Fairbank. A diversified bank, Capital One has branches located in New York, New Jersey, Texas, Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Capital One's subsidiaries offer a broad spectrum of financial products and services to consumers, small businesses and commercial clients and collectively had $250.8 billion in deposits and $362.9 billion in total assets outstanding as of March 31, 2018.

 

Mr. Blackley’s early career included senior roles in consulting and public accounting, including an appointment to the US Securities and Exchange Commission as a Professional Accounting Fellow and as a Partner with KPMG LLP. Mr. Blackley holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Utah. He currently sits on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates (GACRE) for the State of Virginia. Mr. Blackley lives in Leesburg, Virginia with his wife Kathy and sons Nick and Max.

 

Larry Garlick, Palo Alto, CA

Larry is retired after a 30-year career in high tech. He was fortunate to have worked with many of the creators of the networked computer industry in Silicon Valley, including Xerox and Sun Microsystems, as an engineer and executive. In 1990 he co-founded and became Chairman and CEO of Remedy Corporation, which became the world leader in corporate help desk applications and a public company in 1995. Larry retired in 2002 following the acquisition of Remedy.

 

Since then Larry has focused on family, philanthropy, fly fishing, and other sports interests. Larry and his wife Pamela live in Palo Alto, CA, and enjoy having their daughters and two grandchildren close by in the Bay Area. Larry’s primary philanthropy focus is watershed conservation, mostly throughout the Northwest. He has supported Trout Unlimited since 2004, with sustained focus on Klamath Dam Removal and native fish strongholds. Larry encourages NGO partnerships and supports many of TU’s partner organizations. He serves on the Advisory Board of Trust for Public Land Northern Rockies, on the Board of Swan Valley Connections in Montana, and as an Emeritus Board Member of Special Olympics of Northern California and Nevada. Larry holds BS and MS engineering degrees from Stanford University.

Phoebe Muzzy, Houston, TX

Phoebe Welsh Muzzy has been a lifelong hunter and angler, having grown up in Texas as the only daughter in a family of three boys and parents who were avid sportsmen. She began her career as an art advisor for individuals and corporations in Jackson, Wyoming and then Houston, Texas. Beginning in 1985, she began working with various non-profits when she was asked to be a founding member of the Texas Children’s Hospital Advisory Council, a newly formed group of young Houstonians whose mission was to introduce Texas Children’s Hospital to the growing number of young professionals moving to Houston. She has since served on the Board of Trustees of St. John’s School, a K through 12th grade private school in Houston, the Board of Trustees of St. George’s School in Middleton, RI and as a board member, president, and now Advisory Board Member of the Teton Valley Ranch Camp - Education Foundation. This foundation was established in 2001 to preserve and maintain Teton Valley Ranch Camp, a summer camp dedicated to teaching young men and women western values, respect and teamwork through horsemanship, backcountry hiking, and fly fishing in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

 

Tim O’Leary, Portland, OR

Since starting his first software company at age 22, Tim O’Leary has founded more than a dozen companies, primarily in the technology, advertising, and television industries. He is the co-founder and Chairman of The R2C Group, one of the nation’s largest privately-held advertising agencies.

 

More recently, he has dedicated his time to writing, publishing two books, including, “Warriors, Workers, Whiners & Weasels” and his recently released collection of short stories, “Dick Cheney Shot Me in the Face, And Other Tales of Men in Pain” (with the title story inspired by an interaction at The Jackson Hole One Fly).

 

Raised in Montana, he graduated from the University of Montana, and received his MFA from Pacific University. He serves on the board of The Freshwater Trust, The Wild Salmon Center, and is a Trustee for the University of Montana. He is ardent fly fisherman, learning the craft from his father on The Big Horn, Yellowstone, Gallatin, and Boulder Rivers. He now resides in Washington State, near the Columbia Gorge, where he also raises and researches rainbow trout.

 

Rich Thomas, West Milford, NJ - Secretary of the National Leadership Council

Rich is an avid fly fisher and tyer.  As a volunteer, Rich has served at all levels of Trout Unlimited. Most recently, he served as the New Jersey State Council Chair and was a member of the 2014 Strategic Planning Committee for TU. Prior to this, he served as the state’s NLC Representative, during which time he chaired the Delaware Watershed Conservation Workgroup which focused on improving the trout habitat within the watershed by insuring equitable flows from all reservoirs and worked closely with other workgroups which focus on understanding and limiting the impacts of gas development within the Marcellus Shale region.  He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s degree in management with a specialization in program/project management. He has been employed with AT&T for over 30 years.

 

The National Leadership Council also elected trustee, Jim Walker, to replace Mick McCorcle as their chairman. Jim has been Principal of Walker Business Consulting, LLC since 2004. An executive leader with over 35 years of community and management achievements with a Fortune 100 company and with business start-ups, he has served as a volunteer and leader for various business and community organizations and has been honored with several distinguished service awards. As a TU member for 25 years, he has served in various chapter and council leadership roles including NLC Representative from Arizona.

 

Finally, in February, Linda Ach, of San Francisco, CA, was elected to the board of trustees. She is a past chair and current board member of California Trout (CalTrout), a statewide non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure resilient wild fish in healthy waters for a better California. She also serves on the Advisory Council for the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) Water Policy Council, a nonpartisan think tank that provides objective research for California policymakers. Linda is president of the Rosenberg Ach Foundation, a private San Francisco foundation that supports environmental institutions, medical research and higher education. A native San Franciscan, Linda's academic work focused on interior architectural design. She spent over 25 years designing commercial and industrial office space and founded Ach Design Group. Linda also taught planning and design at UC Berkeley Extension.
