11/21/2003 -- Arlington, Va. --  Longtime conservationist Michael Clark has been named as the director of Trout Unlimited’s Western Water Project.

Clark, 58, will oversee the work of the Western Water Project, which operates in six Western states including Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Idaho and California. The project was created by Trout Unlimited in 1997 to increase streamflows in Western rivers by working with the states, irrigators and others. The Western Water Project promotes creative water law reform at the state level by demonstrating through on-the-ground examples and state-level reforms that leaving water in streams benefits fisheries, farmers and ranchers, and watershed health.

“Mike Clark has a long record of working to connect Western communities to the lands and waters that sustain them. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that will prove invaluable to our efforts to protect and restore many of the streams and rivers in the West,” said Chris Wood, vice president of conservation for Trout Unlimited. “We are lucky to have him on our team.”

Clark, who lives in Bozeman, Mont., has served as chief executive of several regional and national organizations, including Friends of the Earth, and as the executive director of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. He was also the founding executive director of the North Lights Institute in the Northern Rockies.

Before coming to Trout Unlimited, he served as a consultant to non-profit groups and part-time Executive Director of Yellowstone Heritage, an organization created to preserving wildlife habitat and working landscapes on private lands in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem.

Mission: Trout Unlimited is North America’s leading coldwater fisheries conservation organization, dedicated to the conservation, protection and restoration of trout and salmon fisheries and their watersheds. The organization has more than 130,000 members in 450 chapters in North America.
