Attending the inaugural event were 12 women who learned about gear, fly casting, streamside entomology, knot tying and safety on the water. The workshop was led by Louise Peltier with the very capable help of Norma Haynes, Brenda Foster, and Carol Stevenson. Maria Wilson, an active TU member from Frederick, MD, Lajan Barnes, President of Chesapeake Women Anglers and an active TU member, and Kiki Galvin, a Fly Fishing Guide and an active member of the Northern Virginia Chapter of TU, also leant a hand enabling almost one-on-one fly casting instruction. false Phil Gay, FFF MCI, was on hand to help with casting as well. Phil Gay and Carol Stevenson hosted the event at their home which boasts an soccer field size backyard and a border on the Gunpowder River. Though high water due heavy rain the day before limited fishing, it was a great event on an almost perfect early summer day. MDTU hopes that this is the first of many Women's Initiative events. The workshop laid the foundation for very productive cooperative relationship with other groups and chapters.
