Report from GBTU Community Outreach at Duker School

Submitted by Darwin Adams

On May 14th 2024 our GBTU chapter helped the Chauncey H. Duker School with its annual outdoors event. It was a good day for everyone. The students (4th and 5th graders) enjoyed the fly tying, led by Paul Melchior and the fly-casting led by Kurt Meier. Several parents got some basic fly-tying instructions from Paul, then the parents helped students in tying a Wooly Bugger fly. Very cool. We had about six volunteers from the school who specifically requested to help our team with the fly casting and fly tying.

I'd like to thank the teachers and parents who volunteered. It was very appreciated. Thanks to GBTU volunteers, Bill Davis, Kurt Meier, Bill Orth, Ben Hanrahan (a new member), David Mooney, and Dick Dragiewicz. Special thanks to Paul Melchior from Northern IL Fly Tyers (NIFTY) for his help. The report from students, parents, and teachers stated our part of the event was a success. Great job volunteers!
