I’m a westerner – a fourth generation Wyoming guy who thought all the great trout fishing in America was somewhere west of Laramie. Not so – not even close. I was reminded of that recently in a conversation with Andrew Trelease, the owner and operator of Trout Haven. The primary destination for anglers coming to Trout Haven will be Spruce Creek – we’ll come back to that soon – but Andrew also fishes other waters in three states: both the east and west branches of the Delaware in New York, the Little Juniata River in Pennsylvania and the Deerfield River in Massachusetts. In different seasons and on different waters, you could fish with this great new TU Business member for a decade and never have the same fabulous experience twice. But if we’re going to talk about Trout Haven, we have to talk about Spruce Creek in central Pennsylvania. This is, by anyone’s definition – eastern or western – premier trout water. This is a private stream, with a lot of fish – a lot of big fish. Rainbows, browns and brook trout – they’re all here. Fish in the 20-inch class are common, and insect hatches are year-round. These are big, burly fish and you’ll have a world-class experience fishing for them here. Andrew is proud of the fishing at Spruce Creek – as he should be. And he knows fishing here – he’s a dedicated conservationist who is committed to cold, clean water and strictly catch and release fishing. He’s also committed to a quality fishing experience. Almost the entire length of Spruce Creek is private water; when you fish Spruce Creek the only other people you’ll encounter are those in your group. There is enough water for a group of six to have individual solitude if they wish. Limited fishing pressure means big, healthy trout eager to take your fly! But no great fishing experience is complete without a great lodge. That’s why you need to stay at Hemlock Lodge at Trout Haven. Hemlock Lodge opened for business in 2015. This beautiful new lodge was built using hemlock trees taken from the expansive property on which it rests. Each room is equipped with two queen size beds, seating/storage, and a full private bathroom. Anglers have the option of single or double occupancy accommodation. Relax in the large common area and kitchen with complimentary cable and high speed WiFi internet. Enjoy a drink on the beautiful wrap-around porch that extends from the lodge's entrance, past each individual room's entrance, to the elevator access door. Check it out. Visit the website. Book a trip. Spring is coming and the fish are hungry. Fish Trout Haven. You’ll be glad you did.
