Chapter President Buck Skillen noted that we had 30+ volunteers come out (not bad for picking up trash on such a nice day) and saw that we had some representatives from the boating community come out. Thanks for helping us care for the river we all love.We also had more young people than last year.I don't have a count of the number of bags hauled off the river banks, but it had to be several dozen. Thanks to the city of Durango for handling pick-up. This is an important event for us, practically and symbolically. On the practical front, we all fish the Animas and like it to be a beautiful experience. Symbolically, the cleanup stands for our wider efforts to preserve clean, cold water in all of Southwest Colorado. For anyone who is interested in doing even more to help Five Rivers keep our rivers beautiful, how about coming forward to be the chief organizer for next year's cleanup? It takes a relatively small amount of time, but after many years of service our own Ty Churchwell is ready to pass the baton. Imagine the feeling of satisfaction you would get from having marshalled the troops to clean the river all the way through town! Give it some thought, and thanks again for coming out. As always, comments are welcome here, or if you are interested in becoming Cleanup Kahuna, drop us a line at fiveriverstu.org.
