Video spotlight: How to water haul

Throwing big streamers, heavy "hopper-dropper" rigs or multiple-nymph rigs can be a bear to cast. While a traditional cast can work, anglers open themselves up to potential errors—and potential tangles—if they're not very careful casting these rigs.

Fly Casting | How to Water Haul

Above, Pete Kutzer of Orvis demonstrates a super-simple method for casting heavy or mult-fly rigs—the water haul. The water haul simply uses friction betweeen the fly line and the downstream current to load the rod. The angler is then left with a simple forward cast upstream to the target zone. Pay special attention to how Pete turns his wrist to face the target—this is easier on your casting arm and will improve your accuracy.
