Water managers are beginning to make room in Palisades Reservoir for snow melt and run off. Flows were increased to 12,300 cfs have stabilized over the past couple of days. As the water warms up due to our warm weather and stabilizes, trout will get more active during the warmer parts of the day. Look for feeding fish in slow recirculating eddies, tail outs and scum lines. Midges and Baetis will make up any of the surface action. Right now nymphing is your best bet. Try small rubber legs, zebra midges and small pheasant tails. Don’t forget about the streamers worked low and slow. Keep in mind that the South Fork is a very different river right now than it was mid-summer. Flows are turbid and cold. That means many spots you fished throughout the summer are likely not holding fish. Boat ramps are now open on the entire river.
