Mr. Shaner has been fishing as long as he can remember and caught his first trout on a fly he tied himself in 1965. Growing up in the Finger Lakes Region of New York he began making the pilgramage to the Catskill Rivers as soon as he could drive. Over the years he has fished extensively across the United States and made several trips to England to fish the famous Chalk Streams and other rivers. He has special love for Montana and Wyoming having lived in West Yellowstone, Montana for a number of years. Some of his all time favorite rivers include The West Branch of the Delaware, The Beaverkill, The Firehole and Madison systems in and around Yellowstone National Park, and the Rivers Ichten, Eden and Eamont in England. Mr. Shaner has managed fly shops, guided, and been a sales representative for Orvis, Cortland, and currently is a Regional Manager for Pure Fishing. His interest in fly tying goes back to his boyhood as a self taught enthusiast with an interest the traditional patterns and natural materials leading to a fascination for the European spider style wet flies (known in the United States as "soft hackles"). Mr. Shaner currently lives in New York State, just minutes from the West Branch and the Beaverkill where he tends to his ever growing "library" of classic angling and tackle books primarily devoted to books detailing the development of flies and tying techniques.
