MAY 09 Pursuing Rainbows in Otter Creek

In the shadow of Fort Knox, Otter Creek tumbles over gravel beds, under limestone cliffs, along a well-trodden trail and finally dumps its rainbow ladened water into the Ohio River. Stocked with 11,500 rainbows and 500 browns (released in Fort Knox) this stream fished in all but the hot summer months will give up 30-40 fish to the angler fishing the right flies. Make no mistake these fish grow wary and the host's suggestion of flies can make the difference between no fish and lots of fish. A 6x fluorocarbon tipppet is recommended.
 

There are 4 drive in accesses to this 10 mile long stream. Chest high waders are best, but waist high ones can suffice if you watch your steps. The stream bed can be slippery in spots and good wading boots are a must. Most water is just thigh high with long shallow runs, occasional deep pools and drop off shelves. Even a moderate rain can muddy this stream but in 2 days it will clear. Come June gaggles of young vacationing tubers will all but end the fishing for the summer.

Directions: 
Those traveling from Lexington should  take I-64 west and upon approaching Louisville turn left onto the Gene Snyder Parkway: 265/841. Drive to the end of the parkway and turn left (south) onto US 31W/US 60. In the town of Muldraugh turn right onto KY 1638 and drive 2.7 miles and you will see the Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation sign on your right. Turn in, pay the $3 daily fee, collect a park map, drive a short distance, take the first turn on your right and drive down to the Garrettsville Picnic Area. We will meet here at 8:00 AM. If you need transportation the trip host can help. Driving time from Lexington is about 2 hours and the distance about 125 miles.
