Big Creek Culvert Replacement Project

Goals

Trout Unlimited's goal is to enhance and expand access to stream habitat for Westslope Cutthroat and Bull Trout on Big Creek, a tributary of the Pahsimeroi River.

Tactics

TU staff and partners will remove an undersized and perched culvert and replace it with a 50-foot modular free-span steel bridge.  The current culvert strands Bull Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout by eliminating access to stream channel--at high flows, the culvert becomes a velocity barrier, especially for trout in juvenile life stages. We financed the bridge construction with grant monies from the Snake River Basin Adjudication funds and will partner with Custer County Road and Bridge Department to install the bridge.

Victories

After 2 years of impasse, both Lemhi and Custer counties agreed to the bridge design and to move forward with the project.
