Hermosa Creek

Goals

Hermosa Creek is one of those rare watersheds where you can go from work to the high country and be catching eager trout in the amount of time it takes you to lace your boots. Located just outside of Durango, this area is home to some of the finest elk and deer habitat in Colorado, and a favorite of locals, guides, and visiting hunters and anglers.

Trout Unlimited is working to protect the watershed as a whole through legislation championed by Sen. Michael Bennet and Rep. Scott Tipton. The bill protects the area, 107,886 acres, through a combination of wilderness, roadless areas and special management areas.

Tactics

The bill is based on a set of recommendations from the Rivers Protection Workgroup, a large and broadly supported, well-attended workgroup that met over the course of two years to develop a compromise that would protect Hermosa.

Victories

The Hermosa Creek Watershed Protection Act was introduced by Sen. Bennet and Rep. Tipton in the spring of 2013 and was formed from a set of recommendations put together by the Rivers Protection Workgroup.
