O and C lands make up about two million acres of public grounds in Oregon - some of the best hunting and fishing known to sportsmen in that state.
However, there has long been controversy over how those lands are managed. With the downturn in the timber harvest, many communities saw tough times. Trout Unlimited is working to find the right balance between protecting many of the values these lands hold for sportsmen, while allowing for smart timber harvest in areas where it makes most sense.
By working with stakeholders, agencies, local decision makers and legislators, Trout Unlimited is trying to find a way to sustain the excellent fisheries that run through O and C lands while allowing smart harvest of timber in appropriate areas.
In November, 2013, Sen. Ron Wyden introduced a draft of a bill that begins to resolve the long standing issues over O and C Lands in Oregon. The legislation continues to evolve and sportsmen continue to play a role in that discussion.
