This is our Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter newsletter that will be coming out twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. Fly of the Month - Larry's Renegade Written by Mike Gentry This issue's pattern is an old stand-by searching dry fly that apparently passes for a fair variety of streamside terrestrials (though I've never encountered anything reminiscent, other than perhaps a jazzy-colored caterpillar). I call it "Larry's Renegade" in memory of Larry Forsythe, a long-time fishing buddy who just passed away and who shared many days on the Deschutes with me fishing his favorite fly. It is a simple but effective pattern. Materials: Hook: Tiemco 5212, #s 10-14 Thread: Black 8/0 Tag (optional): Gold flat foil ribbing Body: Peacock Herl Rear Hackle: BrownFront Hackle: White 1. Attach the thread behind the eye and wind back to the bend of the hook. 2. Attach the gold foil ribbing and tightly wind away from the eye several turns, then toward the eye back to the tie-in point, tie off and clip.. 3. Tie in a brown hackle by its butt and wind shiny side forward nine or ten tight turns, tie off and clip. 4. Tie in a long peacock herl, butt first, and create a body by winding forward and backward, tight against the brown hackle and to a little under 1/4 inch from the eye, tie off at that point and clip.5. Tie in a white hackle by its butt and tightly wind shiny side forward to just behind the eye, tie off and clip.6. Build a head, tie off, clip and cement with a small drop of head cement.
