San Gabriels National Monument - Public Meeting

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 - 11:00pm to Wednesday, August 27th, 2014 - 2:00am

Hello Fellow Sportsmen and Sportswomen:

Trout Unlimited has been working for several years with other conservation groups to better protect critical aquatic and terrestrial habitat, and fishing and hunting opportunities, in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountain ranges.  In the San Gabriels, we are engaged in a collaborative effort to protect and enhance the East and West Forks of the San Gabriel River – one of the few trout streams readily accessible to Los Angelenos.

Representative Judy Chu and local leaders are working to protect the San Gabriel Mountains through legislation, but gridlock in Congress has prevented the region from receiving the timely protections it deserves.

Fortunately, we have a new opportunity to permanently protect the  San Gabriel Mountains.

The U.S. Forest Service is holding a community meeting to explore opportunities for enhancing access, recreational use and protection of scenic, cultural and historic areas of interest in the San Gabriels. TU urges sportsmen and women to attend this event and express our support for designating this unique area as a national monument. This designation would be good for fishing and hunting in the San Gabriels because it would guarantee these activities will always be allowed in this area, and would help deliver more resources to this area to conserve and enhance both habitat and access.
